A nice view of the Sarajevo Airport from the landing strip side. Also a close jaunt to the Sarajevo Tunnel.
During the Siege of Sarajevo during Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995, the Sarajevo Tunnel was constructed by the besieged citizens of Sarajevo in order to link the city of Sarajevo, which was entirely cut-off by Serbian forces, with the Bosnian-held teritory on the other end of the supposedly neutral area at the Sarajevo Airport controlled by the United Nations. The tunnel linked the Sarajevo neighbourhoods of Dobrinja and Butmir.
In the first weeks of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina the airport was taken over by Serbian forces who seriously damaged and looted the airport. From June 1992 until the end of the war the airport was under UN control which used it to fly in humanitarian aid when the besieging Serbs permitted it. The airport was the site of many tragedies during the war since the only way to leave the city was to cross the airport runway and reach government territory on the other side. Around 800 people were killed in the attempt by Serb gunners on three sides of the airport, until a tunnel was dug under the runway.
The Tunnel is about 150 meters SE of the cache on the left side of the road.
