About an
hour and a half up and about an hour down should be about average
hiking time for this cache.
This is a spectacular location near the base of Ripple
Mountain.
.
.
From the Kootenay Pass parking lot the road is permanently closed
and deactivated up to the Ripple Ridge trailhead. You may drive a
couple hundred metres up the road to a small parking area away from
the hi-way. The road is a nice half hour walk. When you reach the
upper Park Boundary you will need to turn right onto Ripple Ridge
Trail . Another half hour will bring you to the cache. Once at
“Lightning Strike” please do not attempt any dangerous
shortcuts as that would boost the terrain rating to a solid 5. As
for any backcountry hike.... be prepared for anything. The upper
reaches of the trail can be easy to lose in spots but being a ridge
walk keeps it straight forward enough. The terrain rating of 4
reflects only the last few metres through the boulder field.
(Alternate access to the trailhead I will leave for the offroaders
to figure out. It is a maze of logging roads back there and none of
my maps can agree on where they are situated.)
This cache is very low on swag ... just a roll of black tape and
hand warmers in case you need them.
Congratulations to the Kootenay Pirates for their
10,000th find !
