Geocache Description:

A challenging nano in what can be a very busy part of Stromness particularly during the summer when there can be hordes of muggles in this location! Stealth will be required so please do not risk the cache being muggled - you can always return at a slightly less busy time! Could finders please ensure that the nano is replaced in exactly the same position at LOW LEVEL. Do not overtighten the cache. DO NOT ENTER THE GARDEN BEHIND THE BOARD UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PLEASE.

In Viking times Stromness was called Hamnavoe, meaning "peaceful" or "safe harbour".

First recorded as the site of an inn in the 16th century, Stromness became important during the late 17th century, when England was at war with France and shipping was forced to avoid the English Channel.

Ships of the Hudson's Bay Company were regular visitors, as were whaling fleets. Large numbers of Orkney men, notably from Stromness, served as traders, explorers and seamen for both. Stromness Museum reflects these aspects of the town's history (displaying for example important collections of whaling relics, and Inuit artefacts brought back as souvenirs by local men from Greenland and Arctic Canada).

Several times a day, the ferrry to and from Scrabster in Caithness berths just across the harbour from this cache location.

Please locate the cache from the road and do not enter the grounds of the nearby building to look for it.
