The old, the new and hopefully forever with amazing views from Mt Nowa Nowa. The wooden tower was used until the 1960's and is typical of the wooden fire towers. This is the best condition of the remaining for 4 wood towers left in Victoria. There is a cabin in the telstra towers that is still used.
Hopefully it will be maintained into the future. The cabin in the tower is owned by DSE and is typical of the arrangements when fire detection and communications are shared. Hopefully this method will be used forever, However rich people with political influence and a get-quick rich scheme are trying to replace fire towers with cameras. While this technology may sound good, CSIRO research indicates an average of 2 mins for a human fire spotter, compared to 30 mins ave for the technology. Nothing more needs to be said. For more information on the history of fire lookouts go to www.firelookoutsdownunder.com.
There is 2wd and 4wd tours to my other caches Splotchy and Stingers Knob (another historical fire tower).
There is a picnic table here. Care must be taken on all Bush Tracks. Can be an alternative route between Orbost and Nowa Nowa. If summer say g'day to Wally in the Cabin, you probably wont be allowed up, but the view from the ground is awesome.
Original contents are Lavender Fragrant Oil, Stones, Skull Rock, Travelling Kombi TB and Glow in the Dark Fish.
