As you follow the Great Lakes Seaway Trail around Lake Ontario, you’ll find Sandy Island State Park on the eastern shoreline. It is part of the 17-mile Eastern Lake Ontario Dune and Wetland Area. Formed by wind and wave motion, the sand dunes provide a unique home to many native plant and animal species – several of which are rare. It is the only significant freshwater dune site in the northeastern United States.

The Sandy Island State Park includes a sandy beach, a car-top boat launch, a pavilion and picnic area with tables and grills, and restrooms. From Memorial Day weekend to the third weekend in June, the park is open weekends only. During the summer months it is open daily. Hours are from 9 a.m. to dusk with swimming available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $7 per car for day-use of the park.

Begin your search in the lower picnic area.

Happy Hunting!!
