Geocache Description:

Withnell Circular can be done in any order and the full route will take around 2 - 3 hours. It is approximately 5 miles long. The cache is a small clip lock box with log, pencil and small swaps.

This cache is about 1/2 way along Withnell Local Nature Reserve, which is approx 0.6 miles long. The terrain is mostly gravel but can be muddy in places, it runs along the railway cutting of the former Chorley to Cherry Tree line (see #6 for more info on the railway).

Artists impression of the Fishladder A fish ladder is a structure designed to allow migrating fish, generally salmon and trout, to negotiate a man made structure like a weir or dam. They are constructed by a series of water filled stepped pools (hence the name 'ladder'). There has to be a flow of water great enough to attract the fish to the bottom but not too great that the fish become exhausted before reaching the top. The fish can negotiate around the obstruction by swimming up the ladder or in a series of small jumps. If any salmon or trout are trying to use this fish ladder then they probably got lost several miles down 'stream'.

As the cache is located in a Nature Reserve permission has been obtained from the park rangers. Please do be respectful of the reserve when looking for the cache, if any damage is caused the cache will have to be archived.
