Bluebird Gap Farm was originally located on the site of the Hampton Coliseum. It opened there in 1966 and was then named "Old MacDonald's Farm." The farm was home to 105 domestic animals which were obtained through donations and indefinite loans. It was redeveloped at its current location on Pine Chapel Road in 1969. The facility offers a unique farm setting in an urban environment to provide children a first hand experience of life on a farm and allows them to see animals native to Virginia.
About Bluebird Gap Farm
Bluebird Gap Farm offers an exciting, family-oriented adventure and educational experience rarely see in an urban environment. The 60-acre farm has about 150 domestic and wild animals, including everything from the usual array of farm animals to a raccoon, birds of prey, whitetail deer, tortoises, and peacocks. A shelter with 4 picnic tables and charcoal grill is available on a first come, first served basis (user must provide own charcoal). Other picnic tables are placed throughout the farm for guest's convenience. The antique display barn features snack and drink vending machines. Animal feed machines are located in several locations for those wanting a more 'interactive' experience (don’t forget your quarters!). Visitors will enjoy the Hampton Master Gardeners' Display Garden and Arboretum (a work in progress), a large playground and public restrooms, a nature trail, a new stage with seating for special events and activities. Admission is free.
Hours of Operation
The park is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am-5pm. The park is closed on all major holidays except Easter.
Directions
I-64 exit 263B onto Mercury Boulevard. Turn right onto Coliseum Drive, follow to stoplight, take right onto Pine Chapel Road. The farm will be on the left.
A HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY
KNOWN AS
BLUEBIRD GAP FARM
The first known owner of the property on which Bluebird Gap Farm now stands was Captain William Tucker. Tucker was an accomplished English sea captain, a wealthy plantation owner in Virginia, and the Commander of Kecoughtan (present day Hampton). Captain Tucker is lesser known for owning the first African American born in America, to Captain Tucker's slaves Anthony and Isabella. But he's perhaps best known for ending peace talks with the local Algonquian Indians by offering them a poisoned drink after the Indian Massacre of 1622.
In 1622, Captain Tucker bought the property where Bluebird Gap Farm now stands and he, his family, and their slaves lived there for a time before moving closer to his post in Kecoughtan, near present day Hampton University. Though he no longer lived on the Bluebird Gap Farm property, Captain Tucker retained the property until after his death in 1644, when he was killed in another Indian uprising. Captain Tucker is believed to have been buried, along with his slaves, on some other property he owned. This cemetery, the Tucker Cemetery, is the oldest African American cemetery in America and is located in a residential neighborhood near Power Plant Parkway.
Several months after Captain Tucker's death, in 1645, his Bluebird Gap Farm property was sold, with half being bought by Ralph Barlowe and the other half being bought by Captain John Sipsey. Sipsey willed his share of the property to his grandson John Fulcher in 1701. Ralph Barlowe married Katherine West and left his share of the property to her when he died in 1651. Their portion of the property remained in the West family throughout the 1700s.
Margaret West was a descendent of Katherine West, and Margaret married Hadrach Woutten, who was born in 1797 and died in 1835. His gravestone, the illegible one laying flat on the ground at the Davis cemetery, is the oldest grave there.
Margaret West Woutten had a daughter named Alice, who married Philip P. Davis and they went on to have a daughter named Beula. Philip, Alice, and Beula lived on the Bluebird Gap Farm property until their respective deaths. Beula married a Mr. Curtis and they had a daughter named Lilian. Lilian went on to have a daughter whom she named Beulah. Lilian's mother, Beula, died in 1913 only four days before her father Philip, who was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. Philip's wife Alice died in 1922 and was survived by eight children, six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
The property and accompanying cemetery remained in the Davis family until the Warren's bought it around 1950. They were the last private owners before the City of Hampton acquired the property and opened Bluebird Gap Farm there in 1969. The Farm had previously been open just down the street under the name Old MacDonald's Farm but was forced to move when construction began on the Hampton Coliseum. Since 1969, Bluebird Gap Farm has been in its present location.
Our mission as trained volunteers with the Virginia Cooperative Extension is to provide educational opportunities to the public through research-based horticuliture programs and activities, and to enhance our enviroment and community.
Are you aware of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners (VCE-MGs)? Master Gardeners are Virginia Cooperative Extension volunteers that aid in bringing the resources of Virginia's land-grant universities, Virginia Tech and Virginia State University, to the people of the commonwealth. VCE-MGs are dedicated to working with the community to encourage and promote environmentally sound horticulture practices through sustainable landscape management and educational programs. The Hampton Master Gardeners maintain a Help Desk to answer questions about plants, insects and environmental issues. In addition, they conduct classes and workshops on topics appropriate to the season. Some examples are pruning in late winter, vegetables in the spring, lawns in spring and fall, and bulbs in the autumn. Hampton Master Gardeners also maintain a Demonstration Garden at Blue Bird Gap Farm and recently have partnered with the Parks and Recreation Department and the Clean City Commission to establish an Arboretum.
