Geocache Description:

This scenic cache gives tribute to Pittsburgh’s creative aspects.

Hi everyone. Thanks for making this such a popular cache! It's great to see so many visitors to this area. It’s been over two years since the cache was originally placed, and it is still quite active. This cache was meant to be an easy park and grab. It’s so easy in fact that it is virtually sitting out in the open, almost in plain sight. Yes you read that right, it’s barely hidden! Trust your GPS. Four sampling averages were taken of GZ on different days with a Garmin Oregon 400. You are looking for a small black rectangular key cache container. If you are still really lost, check out some of the spoiler photos that others have uploaded from the find. Also the real cache container has an official ‘X&Z’ avatar sticker inside of it. Also on the back side of the real log in really big letters it will say ‘Congratulations for finding the real cache The View Between the Arts. -X&Z’

If you are wondering why we have made the cache description so obvious, it’s because we want you to find the real cache. Throughout the year we have received numerous emails and logs telling us that they found and signed a log in a discarded pizza box or some other weird container… Yet Each and every single time we have checked on the cache in the past two years, we found the cache exactly where we placed it and in good condition. During one recent check we removed three fake caches, all located within 1 foot of GZ!

For whatever reason it seems that people have been creating handfuls of counterfeit caches here. While bizarre, this could either be some sort of college hazing prank by bored students, or it could be that a large number of geocachers have just become incredibly lazy. Perhaps so lazy that that when they can’t find a real geocache they just park their car somewhere near ground zero and toss a “throw down cache” out their car window so they can increase their smiley finds. Who knows??? And quite frankly, who cares. The rules on this cache will follow the simple Geocaching guidelines: If you want the smiley, you have to sign the real log from the real cache. Signatures from “throw down caches” aka “angel caches” will not make the online log.

Here is a real, but only partial, list of items that have been sent to us in emails, shown up in logs, or found at ground zero:

First and foremost: This cache is NOT a used dental floss container!!! We've heard that this dental floss container actually has a log in it with lots of signatures. Although we’ve looked for this imposter cache, we couldn’t find it

-This cache is NOT a "strange looking penny". This penny may have simply fallen from someone's pocket, or it may just be a souvenir from a theme park. Besides, how on earth would you sign a penny??? On that note, its NOT the broken key either.

-No, this cache is NOT a scrap of lined composition paper found with cryptic looking writing on it. This is likely someone's discarded notes from a physics class. This is geocaching, not Fringe. By the way, in response to a DNF in the log below, it’s not the laminated card that says “nerd” on it either… despite what the outside world may think of geocachers.

-This cache is NOT a little broken plastic sculpture. This however may be someone's attempt at a lunchtime art project.

-The cache is NOT a fallen candy wrapper found in the weeds. Just for the record, signing the back of a used gum wrapper next to a wad of tooth decay ridden chewed up gum will NOT equate to finding/logging the geocache.

-And last but not least the cache is NOT hazardous, dangerous, or in any way in an unsafe location. It can be easily reached from within the confines of the park. It is kid friendly. That means no reason to leave the park, climb the fence, jump the train below, etc. No repelling rope or HAZMAT suit needed!! If all else fails and you think the cache is MIA, then please write us for more ideas before handling discarded bio-waste, signing someone's spit out chewing gum, or tossing around anymore throw down caches.

Triple uber kudos points to those that actually find the actual cache! :-)

On a serious note, all jokes aside, let’s keep in mind that as geocachers we have a responsibility to keep the environments we cache in as pristine as or even better than we found them. For example this cache is located in a nice park between two great universities. The city did a wonderful job cleaning up the abandoned buildings that were here. If the city were to do this more often it would really pretty up all the areas in which we live. So while you are out looking for this or any cache, please try to clean up as you go. If you find litter, find a garbage can and toss it out.

P.S. (Here is the original cache description) Whether you’re looking for a nice photographic scenic view of some of this areas greatest attractions, this cache is worth the find. Every now and then the city converts some unused areas into happy little stopping places, complete with a landscaped oasis of planted flowers. These are little treasures in themselves, so a great place to plant a geocache. If you have the time we recommend a hike to see all this area has to offer, parking at Forbes Ave and Schenley Dr, and following Forbes until it reaches Schenley again, then head back on Schenley to Forbes. Along the way you’ll see the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning, Heinz Cathedral, Carnegie Library, the Carnegie Museum, Carnegie Mellon University, Schenley Park, Phipps Conservatory, and much more. If you don’t have time for an afternoon outing, park across the street and head towards the view. Good luck and happy geocaching!
