Welcome to CCC Camp Minong - or what remains of it! This is an easy find with level ground.
CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Camp Minong, one of FDR's "Tree Army" camps was located at this site from June of 1935 to September of 1937. It was formally described as Company 3661 E.C.W. S106 WISC.
During this time 200+ young men aged 18-24 (including my dad) continuously lived on site in tents. A this time there were limited jobs for young men, and FDR used this program to give these youngsters to do, and to build infrastructure. At the time there were thousands of these camps scattered throughout every state with approximately 3 million young men involved.
In total, the young men of the CCC camps planted nearly 3 billion trees, constructed 800+ parks, countless miles of roads and public buildings. The crew from Camp Minong were instrumental in the creation of the Minong Flowage as they were responsible for cutting the trees in the proposed lakebed, and also worked on the construction of the dam.
As you search for the cache, you will notice a number of posts with numbers listed on them. These were the corner posts used to identify each "army" tent where the young men resided.
Directly across CCC Road is where the administrative building and the "mess" were located. After you find the cache, please take a few minutes to explore the area on the other side of CCC road (east side). You can still see one of the concrete posts that held the front gate, and many sections of foundation from the buildings that once existed here proudly.
You will be searching for a Rubbermaid box with snap-on cover. It contains a log, pencil, Snidley Bear to keep watch, and a patriotic bracelet.
Task: Prior to signing the log, please spend 1 minute of silence, listen to the birds, and imagine the young men who lived here all those years ago.
During deer hunting season, be sure to wear blaze orange as you search for this cache.
