Der Grundriss der
Veleda-Höhle

In der Nähe von Velmede, liegt auf der südlichen Ruhrtalseite eine
Höhle, die die Menschen in ihrer Umgebung seit Jahrtausenden in
ihren Ban zieht.
- Die Veleda-Höhle -
Sie gehört zu den ältesten Kultur- und Geschichtsdenkmälern des
Sauerlandes.
Ihren Namen verdankt die Veleda-Höhle , der germanischen Seherin
Veleda, die laut einer Legende, hier Unterschlupf gefunden haben
soll.
Entstehung & Geologie
Die Veleda-Höhle liegt in einem schmalen Band aus
Sparganophyllum-Kalk, das während der Zeit des Devon aus einem
Korallenriff entstanden ist.
Bei der Veleda-Höhle handelt es sich um eine so genannte
Erosionshöhle. Sie hat sich durch Auswaschung des
Sparganophyllum-Kalks gebildet. Somit zählt die Veleda-Höhle zu den
 Sekundär-Höhlen, da der Hohlraum erst nach dem
umliegenden Gestein entstanden ist.
Bei der Auswaschung wird der Kalk durch kohlensäurehaltiges Wasser
(entsteht durch Regenwasser und CO²) aus dem Gestein gelöst.
Dadurch entsteht mit der Zeit ein Hohlraum.
Geschichte
Erste größere Ausgrabungen führte der Geologe Emil Carthaus durch,
der unter anderem auch Grabungen in der Bilsteinhöhle bei Warstein
durchführte.
Neben Tierknochen fanden sich hier unter anderem Knochenreste von
32 Menschen, Keramikscherben und Schmuck. Die Funde wurden
anschließend auf die Eisenzeit datiert.
Dimensionen
Über die drei Eingänge erreicht man eine große Halle, die
stellenweise 12 m hoch und 10 m breit ist.
An die Halle schließt sich ein schmaler Durchgang an, der in eine
zweite etwa 10-15 m breite Halle führt. Auf halber Höhe geht hier
abermals ein Gang ab, der eine Länge von etwa 100 m hat. Den
Großteil der Knochenreste fand man in diesem Seitengang. (Siehe

Der Eingang zur

In the near of the village Velmede, on the south side of the
Ruhrtal, there is a cave which fascinates the people during the
last centuries.
- The Veleda-cave -
It is one of the oldest culture- and history monuments of the
Sauerland.
The cave has its name from a legend which says, that the Germanic
prophetess Veleda found shelter here.
Cave genesis & Geology
The Veleda-cave is located in a small band of sparganophyllum-lime,
which has developed from a coral reef during the time of the
Devonian.
The cave is a erosion-cave which was formed by leaching of the
sparganophyllum-lime. Because the hollow was arisen after the
surrounding rocks, the cave is categorized as a secondary-cave.
During the leaching process the lime will be eroded by carbonic
acid (which comes from rainwater and CO²). So step by step the
hollow grows.
History
The first excavations did the geologist Emil Carthaus, who also did
the excavations at the Bilsteincave in Warstein.
Beside some animal bones even bones of humans, pottery fragments
and jewelry where found here. The finds were dated to the Iron
Age.
Dimensions
There are three entrances which are leading to a great hall. This
hall is about 12 meters deep and about 10 meters wide. At the end
of the hall there is a smaller passage which leads to a second
hall. This one is about 10-15 meters wide. At the middle of this
hall there is a 100 meter long corridor. This is the place where
the majority of the bones were found. (See the ground plan)
