La carrière de talc de Trimouns est située principalement sur le territoire des commune de Lordat, Vernaux et Bestiac dans le département de l'Ariège, en région Midi-Pyrénées. De la carrière est tiré le talc de Luzenac, l'usine de transformation se trouvant sur cette commune.
C'est la plus grande exploitation mondiale de talc à ciel ouvert en activité, assurant 8% de la production mondiale.
L'exploitation du gisement de talc de Trimouns a commencé à la fin du XIXe siècle.
Le talc extrait à plus de 1 600 mètres d'altitude est d'abord trié manuellement, puis acheminé par un téléphérique de 5 km jusqu'à l'usine de transformation située au fond de la vallée, plusieurs centaines de mètres plus bas. C'est là que l'on procède au séchage, au broyage et au conditionnement. Le moteur de ce téléphérique est réversible; en fonctionnement normal, il fournit de l'électricité : il profite de la descente des bennes chargées pour produire l'énergie servant à remonter les bennes vides.
400 000 tonnes de talc sont produites chaque année en moyenne, destinées à divers secteurs industriels (papier, peintures, plastiques, caoutchoucs, céramiques, cosmétiques). 270 salariés permanents travaillent sur le site de Luzenac, auxquels s'ajoutent 70 employés saisonniers entre avril et novembre.

The talc quarry of Trimouns is located mainly on the territory of the municipalities of Lordat, Vernaux and Bestiac in the department of Ariege, in Midi-Pyrenees. The talc of Luzenac is extracted from the quarry, the processing plant being located there.
It is the largest worldwide talc exploitation in open pit still working, providing 8% of world production.
The exploitation of the talc deposit of Trimouns began in the late nineteenth century.
The talc extracted more than 1600 metres above sea level is first sorted by hand and then carried by a cable 5 km long to the processing plant located at the bottom of the valley, several hundred feet below. This is where the drying, grinding and conditioning are carried out. The engine of this cable is reversible; in normal operation, it provides electricity: it takes the descent of the loaded buckets to produce the energy used to ascend the empty ones.
