Roccafiorita Traditional Cache

A cache prepared to let you know the smallest town in Sicily. A small village located in a splendid position in the mountains offer a spectacular sea view and admire much of the Calabrian coast.

Agli albori il paese possedeva solo una piccola chiesa che soddisfava ogni piccola necessità degli abitanti. Agli inizi del 1800, però, un sacrestano che dimenticò una candela accesa in chiesa, fece divampare un incendio. Il fuoco, protratto lungo tutti i muri, allora affrescati ad olio, brucio ogni oggetto e statua presente all'interno del luogo sacro, eccezion fatta per un tabernacolo al cui interno vi era la statua di San Filippo D'Agira. Nel 1888 la chiesa venne ricostruita e una leggenda racconta che, mentre gli operai intonacavano i muri, uno di loro prese un po' di calce e la gettò sul viso della statua di S.Filippo dicendo: "Tutti i santi si sono bruciati ed è rimasto solo faccia nera". In quell'istante l'operaio rimase cieco e, mentre chiedeva perdono, lavò il viso alla statua riacquistando immediatamente la vista.

Nel 1902 venne costruita una statua di San Giuseppe da un artigiano di Gallodoro, il quale l'aveva portata in Francia per una mostra internazionale classificandosi al secondo posto. Quando ritornò al paese, il parroco Carmelo Occhino, la comprò pagandola 100 lire. Essa venne posta accanto alla statua di San Filippo che anno dopo anno venne circondato da altre statue una più bella dell'altra. L'ultima che venne aggiunta fu quella della Madonna dell'Aiuto a cui venne anche dedicato un tempio. La sua costruzione si deve a una storia particolarmente emozionante: nel 1923 tre bambini di Roccafiorita, Carmelo, Alessandro e Filippo, comprarono alla fiera locale una statua della Madonna e decisero che da adulti avrebbero costruito un monumento alla Vergine molto più grande, dedicandole una chiesa.

Nel 1942, in piena guerra, uno dei tre fanciulli, Carmelo, diventato sergente maggiore, trovandosi impegnato in una battaglia, pregò la Madonna affinché egli potesse sopravvivere. Per l'avvenuta grazia Carmelo commissionò a una ditta d'arte sacra di Roma la costruzione della statua promessa da bambino. La scultura fu poi benedetta dal Papa Pio XII (1876-1958) e portate un anno dopo a Roccafiorita. Nel 1944 iniziò la costruzione del santuario sul Monte Kalfa e il 24 maggio del 1945 vi fu collocata l'effige sacra. Da allora il monte, considerato consacrato alla Vergine, è noto anche come Montagna della Madonna dell'Aiuto, diventando un centro di fede e di pellegrinaggio. Oggi giorno è uno dei più noti santuari della provincia di Messina.

Attualmente le feste di San Filippo, San Giuseppe e quella delle Madonna dell'Aiuto sono le più importanti del paese. Durante la prima di quelle sopra elencate, i paesani portano a spasso la statua per le vie del comune correndo e ballando ad una velocità incredibile. Questa stessa procedura viene a volte usata anche per le altre due festività, quella patronale di San Giuseppe e quella della Madonna dell'Aiuto, ma in misura alquanto minore.

La festa della Madonna è quella con le caratteristiche più conosciute. Essa infatti cade nell'ultima settimana di agosto e il paese si popola sempre più, anno dopo anno, di turisti nuovi all'esperienza o che desiderano rivivere la sacralità della cerimonia. Essa è costituita da tre giorni particolari: l'ultimo venerdì del mese una processione porta la statua al santuario sul Monte Kalfa.

Ivi viene tenuta la prima messa. Il sabato la Madonna viene portata in processione per il monte Kalfa, mentre la Domenica viene trasportata nuovamente in paese dove con un ultimo giro e con un gioco di fuochi di artificio si chiudono le festività annuali del paese.

Roccafiorita (Roccaciurita in Sicilian) is at present, with a total area of 1.14 km2, the smallest town size Sicily Italy and the whole island. It is also the least populous town populated by 228 inhabitants of Sicily. It is grim in the district of Valle d'Agro member Union of Municipalities of the valleys of Ionian Peloritani.

In the early days the country had only a small church that meet every little need of population. In early 1800, however, a clerk who forgot a candle in church, he made a blazing fire. The fire extended along all the walls, then painted with oil burn every object and statue inside the sacred place, except for a shrine inside which was the statue of St. Philip to act. In 1888 the church was rebuilt and a legend, while the workers plaster the walls, one of them took some 'lime and threw it on the face of the statue of St. Philip, saying: "All the saints have burned and was only black face ". At that moment the worker was blind, and asked forgiveness, washed his face to the statue immediately regained his sight.

In 1902 was built a statue of St. Joseph by an artisan of Gallodoro, who had led France to an international exhibition and finished in second place. When he returned to the country, the pastor Occhini Caramel, bought 100 pounds paying it. It was placed next to the statue of St Philip's year after year, he was surrounded by more beautiful than the other statues. The last that was added was that of aid to which Madonna was also dedicated a temple. Its construction is due to a very exciting story: in 1923 three children Roccafiorita, Caramel, Alexander and Philip, bought at a local fair statue of the Madonna and decided that as adults they would build a monument to the Virgin much larger, dedicating a church .

In 1942, in the midst of war, one of three children, Caramel, became sergeant, being engaged in a battle, Madonna begged that he might survive. For the grace occurred Caramel commissioned a firm of religious art in Rome promised the construction of the statue as a child. The sculpture was then blessed by Pope Pius XII (1876-1958) and taken a year later Roccafiorita. In 1944 he began building the sanctuary on Mount Kalfa and May 24, 1945 there was placed the sacred effigy. Since then the mountain, considered sacred to the Virgin, is also known as Madonna Mountain Aid , becoming a center of faith and pilgrimage. Today is one of the most famous shrines of the province of Messina.

Currently, the Festival of Saint Philip, Saint Joseph and Our Lady of the aid are the most important of the country. During the first of those listed above, the villagers bring the statue to walk the streets of the town running and dancing at an incredible rate . This method is sometimes also used for the other two festivals, the patron of St. Joseph and the Madonna of the aid, but somewhat lesser extent.

The feast of Our Lady is the most popular features. Indeed, it falls in ' last week of August and the country is populated more and more, year after year, tourists new experience or wish to relive the sacredness of the ceremony. It consists of three special days: the last Friday of the month a procession carrying the statue at the shrine on Mount Kalfa.

There is held the first mass. On Saturday the Madonna is carried in procession to Mount Kalfa , while Sunday is transported back into town where a final round with a game and fireworks close the annual festivities of the country.
