A gentle stroll around Ship's Stern Circuit at Binna Burra. You'll collect clues from 4 waypoints on the way round to locate the final cache which is on public land (not in the National Park) after you complete the walk.
The Ships Stern is one of Binna Burra's iconic walks. The circuit leads down through the rainforest into the head of Kurraragin Valley on Nixon Creek where piccabeen palms, towering flooded gums and large red cedars grow. Take a detour off the main track to the spectacular Lower Ballunjui Falls. The track climbs steadily through rainforest to the top of Ship's Stern Range formed of rhyolite, where the rainforest gives way to eucalypt forest with a dense understorey of spring-blooming wildflowers. There are spectacular views over the Numinbah Valley and Kurraragin Valley as well as the unmistakable Egg Rock (the site of one of our other gentle caching jaunts). Continue through open forest and rainforest before re-joining the main Border Track back to Binna Burra. This is a superb walk with lots of variety. Although it's quite long (19km), there are no really steep sections to climb and it's all on graded tracks. The guide book said to allow 8 hours, but we did it in 5.5 hours including a picnic stop and time for photos, and Mrs Herbz doesn't walk very fast! Come and enjoy a great day out on one of Queenslands best walking tracks. The cache is large pre-form tube. It used to be an ammo can but that kept getting muggled, so we had to change it for something more discrete. Park at Binna Burra NP car park. We suggest you go clockwise starting from the lower entrance to Ship's Stern Circuit. The last 3km walk-out is all downhill if you go this way.
