Geocache Description:

The entire hike to the Tram that is near the top of the mountain is about 2.5 miles, you can ride the tram down. Total altitude at the tram is 1,800 ft. The cache is hidden at the altitude of about 480 ft. It is at a steady incline the whole way up.

This cache is reach by hiking up the Mount Roberts trail. Which can be accessed at either the top of Star Hill in downtown Juneau, a long flight of metal stairs leads you to the starting point, after which is some tough switch backs. The second starting point avoids the switch backs but the trail is not well marked once on it. This trail head is at Basin Road, which is at the end of Gold Street from downtown. The cache itself is an orange nalgeen bottle with a log book and lots of toys and trinkets. We hid it as a group of 5 girls and two parents, for our best friends 10th birthday. The cache is just off the trail, not too hard to get to but will require some looking. Have to watch for muggles as this is a highly used hiking trail. We had to wait a couple times for muggles to pass by just to hide the cache. Lots of blueberry bushes on this trail, usually ripe in July to August. Watch for black bears, this is Juneau and they live here too. Can be pretty muddy in spots, even snowy in the spring. I don't recommend hiking it in the winter or early spring due to avalanche danger. Pretty safe to do mid to end of May to September/October. There is a restaurant, gift shop and more hiking trails once you reach the tram. The hike and can be done by those from the cruise ships looking to do something active. A book shop downtown should have the Juneau hiking trails guide for help to find the trail head or just a helpful and knowledgeable local should be able to give you good directions. This is our first hiding of a cache, we are major newbies.
