Wasserriss am Fuße des Mönchsberges
Aufschlussart: Natürlicher Steilhang und Wasserriss

Als Steilhang wird in den Geowissenschaften ein Berghang oder ein Teil eines Hanges bezeichnet, dessen mittlere Hangneigung über 1:2 oder über 30° beträgt. A cliff describes in geology a slope or a part of a slope which has an average fall above 1:2 or an angle of 30°.
Die Entstehung unterschiedlicher Hangneigungen hängt einerseits vom Gestein des Berghanges ab - wodurch sie sich z. B. von der anderen Berg- oder Talseite (Gegenhang) unterscheiden können - andrerseits von dessen Härte und Lagerungsverhältnissen (Sedimentation, Stratigraphie, Bankung oder Klüfte), von seiner Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Erosion, und nicht zuletzt von seiner Wasserführung und dem örtlichen Klima. The formation of different slope falls depends on the type of rock – so they can differentiate from the one to the other mountain- or valley side – from it’s hardness and bedding conditions (sedimentation, stratigraphy and fissures), the resistance against erosion and the flow conditions and climatic situation.
Im vorliegenden Fall sind im Steilhang mehrere Meter rötliche Mergel aufgeschlossen, die zahlreiche Lagen von Fasergips und Knollengips, sowie innerhalb von Streifen graugrünen Mergeln auch quarzitische Bänkchen enthalten.

Mergel besteht hauptsächlich aus Tonmineralien und Calcit oder Dolomit. Außerdem kann noch Quarz, Glimmer, Pyrit und Gips enthalten sein. Er hat eine sehr feine Körnung und einen muscheligen Bruch.

 At this location some meters of red marls are outcropped in the cliff, which include various layers of fibrous and bulbous gypsums, but also in some inclusions of grey-green marls there are quartzitic bankings.

Marl basically contains of clay and calcite or dolomite. Furthermore there can be quartz, mica, pyrite and gypsum inside. It has a fine grain and a conchoidal breaking.
Mergel entsteht meist aus Planktonschalen und Schlamm, der sich am Meeresboden zu immer dickeren Schichten ansammelt. Mergel kann aber auch aus anderen Calcit-tonhaltigen Sedimenten entstehen. Nach einigen Mio. Jahren tritt er dann als Mergel ans Tageslicht. Marl is generated often from plankton shell and mud which assembles over the tine to large layers. It also can contain other calcite argilliferous sediments. After some million years it reveals as marl.
