Originellement dédiée à saint Jean Baptiste et saint Jean l'évangéliste, l'église fut appelée Sainte-Marie du Mercadal (c'est-à-dire "du marché") en 1384, avant d'être élevée au rang de cathédrale en 1499. L'édifice est aujourd'hui dédié à saint Antonin.
Seul vestige de l'église d'origine, une partie du portail datant du XIIe siècle est de style roman.
Le clocher de style gothique toulousain s'inspire fortement de celui des Jacobins de Toulouse : imposante et briquetée, la tour octogonale est éclairée à chaque étage de fenêtres géminées terminées par un arc en mitre. Elle remonte au XIVe siècle. On pourra remarquer les créneaux et les meurtrières, témoignant du passé houleux de la ville.
Dans le parc tout proche, vous pourrez voir le buste de Gabriel Fauré, (compositeur français né à Pamiers le 12 mai 1845 et mort à Paris le 4 novembre 1924) sculpté dans la roche.
Un petit clin d'oeil aux élèves du Lycée du Castella, en face d'elle : c'est pour eux que les 49 cloches de la cathédrale scandent le temps !...

Originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St; John the Evangelist, the church was called St. Mary's of Mercadal (that is to say 'of the market') in 1384 before being given the status of cathedral in 1499. The building is now dedicated to Saint Antonin.
The only remnant of the original church, a part of the gate dating from the twelfth century is of Romanesque style.
The bell tower of Gothic style looks very much like that of the Jacobins of Toulouse: imposing and made of bricks, the octagonal tower is lit on each floor by twin windows ending in an angular arch. It dates from the fourteenth century. We can note te battlements and loopholes, reflecting the turbulent past of the city.
In the nearby park, you will see the bust of Gabriel Fauré (French composer born in Pamiers on May 12, 1845 - died in Paris on November 4, 1924) carved into the rock.
A nod in the direction of the students in the Lycée du Castella, in front of it: it's for them that the cathedral's 49 bells punctuate the time!
