An easy driveby cache in a delightful location overlooking Water Sound.
Great views across Scapa Flow towards the West Mainland of Orkney and the island of Hoy as well as across Water Sound towards the village of St Margarets Hope.
Of particular note is the island of Hunda connected to Burray by a causeway by Hunda Reef.
Scapa Flow is sheltered by the islands of Mainland, Graemsay, Burray, South Ronaldsay and Hoy. It is about 36 square kilometres, with a sandy bottom and is relatively shallow (not deeper than 50 metres) with most of it about 20 metres deep. the Flow is one of the great natural harbours/anchorages of the world, with sufficient space to hold a number of navies.
Viking ships anchored in Scapa Flow more than 1000 years ago, but it is best known as the site of the one of the United Kingdom's main naval bases during World War I and World War II.
One of its most important uses now is as an anchorage for the oil tankers serving the Flotta Oil Terminal and as a playground for divers who regularly dive on the wrecks of the First World War German High Sea’s fleet scuttled there in 1919.
The cache is a 36mm film canister with log and pencil.
