This is a Once Here, Now Gone (OH, NG) unique homemade cache container hidden on site of what used to be Super Skates of Winter Haven and later changed to Cypress Entertainment Center. For the sake of the hide, please try to hide better than you found it to keep the enjoyment available for the next cacher.
Growing up here in the east side of Polk County there were two major skating rinks. The one at this location and what was Skate Dimensions in Auburndale. What made Super Skates such a great place to come to was the completely wooden floor. At the time it was the only wooden floor in Polk County and you had to travel to Kissimmee's Skate Reflections if you wanted a different wood floor option. It was also the largest rink building in Polk County as well. I spent many a Friday and Saturday night through middle school coming to the most famous hang out spot for kids that age.
Super Skates was later bought out by a guy named Dan and he had his wife run the rink. They changed the name to Cypress Entertainment Center and had big plans to not only use it as a skating rink but also as an entertainment venue. Cypress Entertainment Center later installed a Laser Tag room within the skating rink that required an additional charge once you paid general admission. One little known fact is there were plans for a Go Cart Track behind the building that never got out of the development stages.
Several concerts were held at the venue including 90's R&B/hip hop group Public Announcement which was to a sold out crowd and an Annual Jesus Rally sponsored by the Teen Daily Devotional Ministries at www.TDDM.org. Which one year showcased the musical talents of a band known as Final Kry and Lloyd as well as a young magician who is now the Campus Pastor at the famous Liberty University in Virginia.
The Monday Christian music night was a huge success at the skating rink and saw many churches from all over the area make a weekly outing to the skating rink. However, it was still no match for the Friday and Saturday night crowds that allowed the rink to be sold out on many occasions. Cypress Entertainment Center was also known for their monthly lock-ins. They went all out on these events to the point of one year taking the Survivor TV show theme and creating an entire night of challenges including a Tribal Council and all. Top three finalist got their choice of a Kayak retailing close to $500.00.
It seemed like for a while that the company was going to continue growing. But tragedy hit when the owning family went through a divorce and Dan tried to run both his company and the rink while dealing with the financial struggles of the divorce. A replacement manager came in and continued the amazing tradition of the rink but the financial burden was too much to overcome and the rink eventually shut down and as it seems, this time for good.
Later another company bought this building and has since gone under, but no word on whether the wooden floor is still in tact or if this could one day come back to life in another shape or form.
If you had an experience here at Super Skates or Cypress Entertainment Center, please share in the log as well.
Congrats to the3turtles for FTF Honors!!!
