2 September, 2009. It was fairly warm, but Autumn was definitely approaching. The Explorer Scout group were meeting nearby at their boathouse.
"Who's heard of 'geocaching'?" asked the leader to the dozen or so 14-18 year olds who'd turned up that evening. Two or three mentioned that they had, but for my part I shook my head.
The leader produced 3 GPS units, and then showed us a piece of paper. At the top of the page it was titled "Capability Brown's Lake View" [GCRB43, if you're interested]. Below that was a set of coordinates. The scout members who'd volunteered (including me) to use the GPS devices then worked out how to put the coordinates in. 0.2 miles, the GPS said, along with an arrow pointing to the west.
It didn't take long to get to the point where the GPS unit said "0.00 ft", a location that I would later learn is called "GZ" in the geocaching lexicon.
It wasn't me who eventually found the geocache but I remember its exact location, even though that cache was archived in May of this year.
Almost a whole year later, I have returned here to place this geocache less than 200ft from where that first cache was hidden, and I hope other geocachers have a fun time here. This park is a lovely place to have a picnic, or watch the swans, or play a game, or just to sit in the evening and watch the sunset.
Congratulations to Bailo26 for FTF!
