In 1209 Stephen, once prior of Saint Giustina Church and friar Alberico ordered the building of two small chapels dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and to Saint John the Baptist.

In 1229 the small hermitage became a real monastary which followed Saint Benedict's rules. The monastary was supported by the noble Maltraversi family from Castelnuovo and, later on, by the Carrara family. Thus increased its fame and the two small chapels were replaced by a more majestic church dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

In 1380 the monastary went under the aristocratic Olivetani Order whose friars were good painters and wood-carvers. The church, composed of a single rectangular nave and an imposing church-bell, was provided with an altar, a wooden-curved choir, a presbyter with trachytic engraved strips. Under the high alter there was the crypt dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The imposing and austere monastery was divided into corridors, cells, stores, a cloister and kitchen gardens. After a long quiet period which lasted until 1771, the Republic of Venice destroyed the monastery, transferred the monks and put up to auction the cenoby and the assets, which were acquired by the Erizzo family. The building turned into a shelter for shepards and went to ruin.
