Geocache Description:

The cache takes to you a location that was once the heart of Camp Croft, a WWII training camp. Camp Croft was named after Major General Edward Croft, a South Carolina WWI officer, and it was home for 13 weeks of training for more than 250,000 Army recruits. Young men came from New York, Pennsylvania, and the New England area to train in combat at the 19,000 acre facility.

Camp Croft was utilized for over 4 years by the Army to prepare young men for serving. The young recruits trained using a variety of weapons including M-1 rifles, Browning Automatic Rifles, anti-tank rockets, and infantry mortars. They also trained in chemical warfare. Once training was complete, the soldiers joined different units to fight battles of WWII all around the world.

As a side note, the camp was also used to house some 900 German prisoners.

Today much of the land has given way to industry and residential homes. 7,000 acres now makes up Croft State Park which offers camping, fishing, and many trails for hiking and bike riding. Take a moment to reflect on what once was a very active training ground for WWII recruits.
