The railway line between Pietermaritzburg up the escarpment to Cedara and beyond to the interior has been a challenge to civil engineers. The current line winds its way up the Dorpspruit valley before disappearing into twin tunnels built in the 1960s and over 6km long to emerge at Cedara. The original line, built in 1916, was much more tortuous and steep with two tunnels, one about 150m long and the other just over 800m long under Hilton village. The line passes through the Ketelfontein grasslands, home of the endangered Hilton Daisy (Gerbera Aurantiaca) and crosses the Old Howick Road (R103) at 1026m AMSL and about 3km down the hill from Hilton. Evidence of the old line can be seen from the dry stone walling on the uphill side and the occasional pylon foundation.
