In memory of Arctic Explorers: One Cache out One Cache In.
This Cache was set by my son and I to commemorate the unearthing of a long buried box that holds either logs from the Sir John Franklin expedition or logs from a later and somewhat more successful explorer - Roald Amundsen. The Cache is set near where the said box was buried under a cairn around 1960 and held secret for almost 50 years. George Washington Porter II had recieved the logs from a local priest when that priest left the Arctic in the 1930's. The priest in turn had recieved the logs from area Inuit looking to dispose of paper that they thought might lead to them being blamed for the death of some of Franklin's men. He gave the precious parcel to Mr Porter who then buried them in what is believed to be an oilskin pouch, dipped in tallow and then placed in a metal canister and funally the butter box we uncovered this week. Today as I register the cache, we don't know what is in fact buried in the box (found three feet below a cairn rebuilt in the 1960's and again more recently).
The cache is beside the high point where Amundsen lived during his time in Gjoa Haven.
A beautiful little northern community, many of the population are descendents of the first George Porter (the current George Porter's grandfather whose son is...you guessed it George Porter IV!) who hailed from Dundee Scotland first as a whaler then as a trader. There is much online about the town, so I leave it to you to find both the information about the town and the cache.
George's younger brother Chester was told by his father in the 1980's that the cache was there. He held the secret to himself until 2008 when he told the family. The dig was very much a cummunity affair with one archeologist and one conservator in attendance to preserve the material found.
The cache is VERY simple with a ziplock bag containing a log book, pencil and sharpener inside a tupperware container. Might be accessible in the winter.
