An interesting tour of the old city junkyard. Boots are
recommended.
The former Ridge Road landfill is located in the NCC Greenbelt. The
site is located on a ridge that runs in east-west direction. It
comprises of two approximately 12m high refuse mounds and occupies
an area of 44 hectares. During the operation of the landfill from
1965 to 1975, over 2.5 million cubic meters of refuse was placed in
the landfill. Impacts related to the landfill include groundwater
and surface contamination with elevated concentrations of heavy
metals. The leachate has elevated concentrations of metals such as
iron, and includes chloride, TDS, boron, and barium.
The site is surrounded by forest stands consisting of maples,
birch, white spruce, white pines, poplars, elm hackberry, ash,
beech, other spruce spices, hemlock, yellow birch, basswood trees
and shrubs. The area is now used as parkland, walking, cycling, and
cross-country skiing in the winter. Trail 52 runs through the
landfill area.
The cache location overlooks an engineered wetland that was
installed to contain and treat the Ridge Road leachate
contaminants.
