Welcome to "Insurgents in Sergeantsville,"
a series of caches with a trifold purpose: to introduce folks to
our funky little village; to provide a bit of history along with
the thrill of the hunt; and to teach the proper pronunciation of
the town.*
Sergeantsville was first settled by a Mr. Thatcher in 1700, and
was later named for Charles Sergeant, an American Revolutionary War
soldier, in honor of the Sergeant family of which three brothers
were local shopkeepers. Green Sergeant Covered Bridge, constructed
in 1872 across the Wickecheoke Creek, is located just west of
Sergeantsville and is the oldest remaining covered bridge in New
Jersey. If you would like to round out your visit, there is a
virtual cache there,
GC77C4. (Spoiler alert: the final stage of
GC1NJ68 is also located near there.) The town of Sergeanstville
was officially created in 1827 when it became desirable to
establish a post office. Until that time, this largely rural area
was known as "Skunktown", perhaps because the town served as a
market center for skunk pelts.
This cache is located on a historic spot that many locals don't
even know about. It's an interesting little piece of history to
stop and reflect on. You will need to pull off the road near GZ in
an area which borders on private property and will need to use
exercise caution and stealth in making the find. Also - be on the
lookout for bees; there seemd to be a lot of them around as we were
hiding the container and taking the coordinates, although we
couldn't see a nest - but please be very careful, just in case!
If you find this cache and the other 3 in the series you will
collect the information needed to find the final
GC2EXFY at: N40 27.0ab W074 58.c0d
The other caches in the series are:
GC2EXBE
Insurgents in Sergeantsville #2: Downtown
GC2EXBK Insurgents in Sergeantsville #3: Hangin' at the
Inn
GC2EXBN Insurgents in Sergeantsville #4: Behind the Green
#s 2, 3 and 4 are all within walking distance, but you will have to
drive a short distance to the final. You could walk up to #1; just
be careful as it's a fairly busy road with no sidewalks.
*It's SIR-gents-ville, there are no sergeants
in Sergeanstville! It's a surname, sir!
