State Flower: Dogwood (a tree)
But to us, North Carolina can be summed up in three letters: obx_decal

obx_beach OBX, or The Outer Banks, is a string of barrier islands that protect North Carolina from the ocean. In the process they undergo intense erosion and are constantly being reshaped by both the waves and the Army Corp of Engineers. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse is the largest lighthouse ever to be moved due to erosion problems.

Some facts about OBX:

- The Roanoke Colony, where Virginia Dare was born, vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587.
- The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, on December 17, 1903.
- The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic.
- Ocracoke was the home base of pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. It is also where the famed pirate was killed. His treasure is rumored to be buried there but has never been found.
obx_horses - The islands are home to herds of feral horses, sometimes called "banker ponies," which according to local legend are descended from Spanish Mustangs washed ashore centuries ago from shipwrecks.
- The ocean beach south of Salvo is our favorite place for a May vacation (it's way too hot, crowded and expensive in the summer months!).

Some facts about the cache:

The cache is a small lock-n-lock container. It is somewhat winter friendly (we don't usually get a lot of snow in this part of the state) and is hidden near a cemetery along the old Rte 2.
