This is one of the series of caches placed throughout Camden County
to bring awareness to historical locations. It has been placed here
with the permission of the Mayor of Somerdale. Please be respectful
of the area around the cache as nothing needs to be disturbed to
find it.
Old Gloucester County, named for Gloucester (or Gloucestershire),
England was formed on May 26, 1686 from the third and fourth tenths
of the province of West Jersey. It included within its boundaries
the present counties of Gloucester, Camden and Atlantic.
Prior to the formation of Atlantic County in 1837, Old Gloucester
County extended from the Delaware River to the Atlantic Ocean and
at one time large quantities of bog iron was dug out of the swamps
and was used to make cannons and cannon balls for the Revolutionary
War and the War of 1812.
Camden County was formed on March 13, 1844. Historic Camden County
was formed with the municipalities of:
Cities: Camden
Townships: Delaware, Gloucester, Newton, Union,
Washington and Waterford
Following is a list of cities, townships and borough in the current
Camden County. It also includes the years that they were formed,
and the years in which existing municipalities ceded land for the
formation of new ones. Some municipalities listed have either been
subsumed into other municipalities, or have changed their names.
The current 37 municipalities are marked with an
“*”.
