Arria, the truly spectacular 33ft steel structure along side the A80 next to Cumbernauld was designed by artist Andy Scott and features two huge swooping arcs inspired by the Gaelic name for Cumbernauld, "Comar nan Allt" which means "coming together of waters" as, geographically, from its high point local burns flow West to the River Clyde and East to the River Forth. Andy is an internationally known artist and also created the Heavy Horse sculpture on the M8 motorway near Glasgow, The Thanksgiving Square Beacon in Belfast as well as many other works both locally and abroad.
the first sounds spoken from the springs core are of a new beginning of people and place
a poetry that bubbles and gargles to the surface to leave this watershed flow east and west
in a rush of words that tumble and fall to going the conversation of two great rivers
a voice calling out I belong I belong adding to the language of the sea and ocean
The name of the statue derives from Arria Fadilla, the mother of the Roman Emperor Antoninus (138 to 161 AD).
Arria was erected 24th August 2010
Under no circumstances should this cache be attempted from the A80. Please start your search for the cache from either the parking co-ords and follow the path to the statue before going to the cache thus keeping North of the fence at all times. Alternatively walk down to it through the cemetery.
