I WENT UP YESTERDAY 1/18/03 TO HAVE A LOOK AROUND, BEAUTIFUL DAY,
THE CACHE IS STILL INTACT. BIG STEVE.This hike is exceptional for
the terrain and views, Three Local Lakes visible from the summit,
potential sightings of California Condors, you will be able to see
for miles !!
Ok here is the beta on the hike and stash. The coordinates given
are the terminus of the hike but you will need additional info to
get there, your first coordinate will be N 34.36.991 X W 118.44.612
this will put you at a gate, sorry, you wont be able to drive past
this gate, park in the lot and make sure you have an Adventure Pass
or you will get tagged, now you may want to bring a bike or not
worry about it and walk, but it is 1.9 miles to the Trail Head from
the gate. At the Trail Head N 34.37.973 X W 118.45.428, # 6N01 (you
can ditch your bike up the trail a bit)you will find another gate,
jump over it and you are on your way. The hike is 4 1/2 miles to
the summit, I think there is one flat spot on the trail so be
prepared for uphill. The trail is a good one but you will need to
use your route finding abilitys, there are small rock carins as you
near the summit, there are also small pieces of flagging and ribbon
to keep you going the right direction. This trail has not been
maintained for about 20 years, few people use it so please maintain
trail manners, dont cross switchbacks,or the erosion will get
worse, dont litter, and when you get to the summit please be
respectful of what is left behind.
Any way when you reach the summit look under the SE corner of
the structure, at the little concrete slab, you will find my
typical container, Black Plastic cylinder with a rubber cap on one
end, standard items inside plus, goodies ! Flashlight &
Batteries, multi tool, light sticks, carabiner key chain, leash, and
a hat,( if you go in summer and forget yours, plus some other
stuff. OK be prepared on this one, from the first gate it's about
13 miles round trip, My partner I did it in the rain with 40lb
packs, the weather can change on you quick so carry what you will
need to protect yourself, bring plenty of water no matter what the
season. From the second gate to the summit, with packs, a bit over
2 1/2 hours, lung burner and thigh burner, but even those not
accustomed to hard hikes will love this one, go slow, enjoy it is a
guaranteed MUST DO ! Plan on 1hr from the first gate to the second
and 3 hrs from the second gate to the summit, spend an hour on top,
refuel with the food and water you carried then head down, There is
great cell service from the top. It's a Great Day Trip. Have Fun !
BIG STEVE***NOTE*** Go ahead and use the coordinates from KMSE N
34.37.975 X W 118.46.667 until I get back up to check, It was
raining pretty hard, maybe I had my eyes closed. BIG STEVE
