Geocache Description:

This is another in a series of caches celebrating the Moore County that used to be!! If you know of any good candidates for the No Longer There Series, the more, the merrier!! You are looking for a small container camo'd to blend in..

The following was developed from the book, 'Railroading in the Carolina Sandhills' by S. David Carriker (1985, Heritage Publishing) and The State Magazine from Sept. 29, 1951 (Vol. 19, No. 18):

Roseland, North Carolina, was founded by John S. Patrick, Industrial Manager for the Seaboard Railroad, the same fellow who founded Southern Pines and Pinebluff. It was envisioned as an educational center for the Sandhills area, sort of an "Oxford of the Piedmont", if you will. The new Pierce College was the center of the town, which grew quickly and soon boasted a hotel a number of churches, and its own newspaper, the Roseland Enterprise.

However, in 1904, a forest fire devasted the town, all but wiping it off the map. The decision not to rebuild the railroad depot was a fatal blow and most of the town was never rebuilt. Old foundations dot the farmlands and gamelands in the area, fading reminders of the town that once was.
