18h.
Bonne découverte !
ENGLISH :
Since more thousand years, the Tower of
Peyrebrune perched on its mound of granite dominates proudly the
valley of Alrance. It is the donjon of a castle been attested since
the second half of the XIth century which was the administrative
centre of the barony or the viscounty of Peyrebrune and Thouels.
This powerful seigneury covered approximately the current communes
of Alrance, Villefranche-de-Panat and Lestrade-et-Thouels. She was
herself a vassal of the County of Rodez.
Situated in 913 meters in height, the five-storeyed tower measures
about twenty meters in height with a rectangular base of 7,70
meters on 6,10 meters. Its walls have a thickness of 1,50 m. Since
the wooden platform which crowns the top of the tower such a
covered way, the panoramic view is impregnable with in
particular
the pyramid of Lagast (929 meters in height).
The castle occupied approximately a rectangular
surface about 150 meters ( N-S) on around thirty ( E-O). We
distinguish some tracks of the ditch which lined it in the North
and on the West. The tower doubtless contained the house of the
Lord, serving as ultimate possible cutting off and as watchtower.
There was a chapel of the castle, which was in the south part of
the surrounding wall and was approximately 13 meters on 7,70. The
circular opening of a well, filled, sees itself against the angle
North-West from the tower.
Everything in the architecture of the tower evokes the second half
of the XVth century, period when it is reconstructed after the
Hundred Years' War. The tower had five arched floors. It is still
crowned by the ravens which supported formerly machicolations. We
reached the tower at the level of the first floor by the current
front door surmounted by the badge of Panat (a cross of red Saint
André on white bottom). The bottom, that is the ground floor, where
we had to come down by an opening arranged in the vault, was
doubtless a cellar or a prison. Among openings (four at the noon
and in the East, three on the West, one in the North) represent
windows containing a seat. In the fifth floor see each other the
rests of a stone fireplace(chimney). Works of excavation had been
begun, a few years ago, they are given up today.
The Religious wars are at the
origin of the destruction of the castle of Peyrebrune: indeed, the
cardinal of Richelieu dismantle it in 1630. From this date, the
saved Tower deteriorates little by little. The siege of an
administrative district Peyrebrune stay nevertheless. After the
French Revolution, the Tower is sold but Peyrebrune becomes the
administrative center of a municipality covering Alrance and
Villefranche-de-Panat (until 1843) .Le monument resists to time and
to attempts of destruction. The building is nevertheless in bad
state at the end of the XIXth century. It is then that abbot
Lamouroux, priests of Alrance, undertake its restoration. The elder
of both brothers makes fit out the chapel at the ground floor of
the tower in 1897, build a staircase but especially set up the
statue of the Virgin Mary on a foot of estal metallic in 1898. They
establish a pilgrimage last Sunday of August, today still
current.
It is in 1999 when the municipality of Alrance acquires the Tower
in the parochial advice. Works of renovation were then undertaken
by the french national architects. A wooden staircase and floors
are fitted out. In its summit, a wooden platform and a roof which
ViergeMarie always dominates were built. In summer, 2000, the Tower
of Peyrebrune reopened its doors to the public. It visits every day
of July and of August between 2 pm and 6:30 pm and every Sunday of
June and September between 3 pm and 6 pm.
Good discovery !
