The hamlet of Gurtnellen is one of those small places which you
hardly notice when rushing between Central Switzerland and the
south.
In 1882 the Gotthard Railway was opened though the village, and
in 1980 the Gotthard motorway was inaugurated. Apart from the
construction period, Gurtnellen does not seem to have benefited
much from either of these routes. In fact it suffers from
continuous noise and pollution from both types of traffic, together
with damage from avalanches and floods.
Fortunately there is another more pleasant part of Gurtnellen
which is virtually unaffected by traffic. This village is situated
200m higher than the sad houses by the river, and is a good place
for a relaxing meal. But the track doesn't stop there, continuing
to gain a further 200m in height up to a small parking area with
fireplace and wonderful views over the narrow valley of the Reuss
and the surrounding mountains. The cache is hidden a few metres
away - almost a drive-in.
Hiking and cycling trails also pass through this spot, but are
best left to really fit cachers, who can award themselves two
addition terrain stars.

Gurtnellen Wiler ist einer dieser kleinen
Ortschaften durch die man auf dem Weg zwischen der Zentralschweiz
und dem Süden rast, ohne sie wirklich zu bemerken.
Mit der Eröffnung der Gotthardbahn im Jahre
1882 und der Gotthardautobahn 1980, bekam Gurtnellen gleich zwei
Quellen von Lärm und Verschmutzung, ohne davon zu profitieren. Als
ob Lawinen und Überschwemmungen nicht schon genug Belastung
wären.
Zum Glück gibt es eine angenehmere und
ruhigere Seite der Gemeinde, die fast frei von Verkehr ist.
Gurtnellen Dorf liegt 200m höher als die gebeutelten Häuser am
Fluss. Hier oben kann man in einem gemütlichen Restaurant entspannt
essen. Der Weg endet hier jedoch nicht, sondern führt noch 200m in
die Höhe bis man zu einem kleinen Parkplatz gelangt. Von der
Feuerstelle aus geniesst man wunderbare Ausblicke über das Reusstal
und die umliegenden Berge. Der Cache ist von dort nur wenige Meter
entfernt versteckt – fast ein Drive-In.
Auch Velo- und Wanderwege führen durch diesen
Punkt, aber wegen dem steilen Gelände sind sie nur für wirklich
fitte Cacher geeignet. Diese können sich mit zwei zusätzlichen
Terrain-Sternen prämieren.
