I found out from a friend back in the 90’s that there were fish in this pond. He was fanatical about fishing and urged me to join him. He’d been catching 5-6 pound bass on a regular basis, and that sounded too good for me to pass up.

So a few days later we head over. He brings his de-liar scale so we can see how big our fish are. I catch one almost immediately. Seems like about a pound – not bad, but not nearly what I had hoped for.

FishFan: “nice fish. That one is probly 5 pounds.”

Me: “no way that’s 5 pounds. It’s hardly 1 pound.”

FishFan puts the fish on the de-liar and announces: “yup, 5 pounds”

Me: “wait a minute. The scale is at about 14 ounces.”

FishFan: “well, yeah, it registers low. You have to add three and half pounds to everything.”

Hmm. I could see the de-liar wasn’t doing its job. I mean, I think it was weighing accurately. It just didn’t stopping the lying.

We catch several fish there. We release them all, since the water looks so dirty (probably chemical runoff).

We’re fishing right next to the walking path, in full view of the walkers. Several stop and ask how we are doing, and then (almost every person that stopped) cautions “don’t eat any fish from that pond!”

A few years later there was a big kill in the pond. All the fish died. At the time, no one knew what killed them. As far as I know there are no more fish in the pond – at least, I’ve never tried fishing there lately. Maybe there’s a fisherman out there who can confirm or deny.
