The city of Kaiserslautern is in Southerwestern Germany in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. The American name of Rheinland-Pfalz is Rhineland-Palatinate.

Kaiserslautern was named after the Lautern river by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa who enjoyed the hunting in the Kaiserslautern area. Kaiser means King or Emperor so the city name translated to English means The Emperor's Lautern.

The history of the Kaiserslautern area goes back to the at least 800 B.C.E. when Celtic people roamed the area. The modern history begins around year 1100 C.E.

Kaiserslautern is the host city of probably one of the largest American communities outside the USA since many American U.S. Army and Air Force bases are located in or around the city. In fact Ramstein Air Force base boasts of having the world's largest Post Exchange (PX) where American military members can shop. The American community contributes over $1,000.000.000.00 to the Kaiserslautern area every year. One third of the Kaiserslautern area population of 150,000 is American. It is the American military that have nicknamed the city K-Town.

Kaiserslautern is a great city to live in or near and has a very active Art, Culture, and Sports Program. It is the home of the Pfalztheater with 300 full time employees and was where the German version of West Side Story first played.

Also "the Kammgarn stands among the top venues in Germany and serves as a first-call club for rising groups and performers as well as established jazz, rock, blues and pop artists in Europe. Performances have included international stars B.B. King, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Pat Metheny, Uriah Heep and Jan Garbarek".

Kaisersalutern is home to the 1. FC Kaiserslautern soccer team which has won the German championship five times.

Lastly, Kaiserslautern is home to many manufacturing companies to include:

Adam Opel GmbH (car factory)
Bahntechnik Kaiserslautern (formerly Bundesbahn-Ausbesserungswerk; trains and wagons)
Corning GmbH (catalytic converters)
CP Schmidt Verpackungswerk GmbH & Co. KG (cardboard and wrappings)
Euromaster GmbH (tires, company headquarters)
Fruit of the Loom GmbH (European center for logistics)
General Dynamics Santa Bárbara Sistemas GmbH (until 2002 Eisenwerke Kaiserslautern; amphibious vehicles, mobile bridges for military use)
Keiper GmbH & Co. KG (carseats)
Pfaff Industrie Maschinen AG (sewing machines)
