Geocache Description:

Historic Hartsville
.
This is the second in a series of caches to commemorate our towns 300th Anniversary: 1711-2011. The Tricentennial Committee sponsored a Township wide geocache hunt which was held in May 2011. Warminster Township has asked to have a geocache event in Fall 2012 in conjunction with planting another 300 trees in the Warminster Community Park - stay tuned.
.
Short History of the Area
.
Located on the west side of Old York Road, the facility dates back to 1832, when Rev James Wilson opened a classical school for boys. Later, in 1850, Rev. Jacob Belville and Harriet McElroy opened the Roseland Female Seminary on Wilson's beautiful Hartsville property. Tuition and room and board in 1855 were $75.00 for 21 weeks.
.
During the Civil War every student joined the Ladies Soldiers Aid Society to support the troops.. Before closing in 1863, the institute hosted a major fund raising event for the war effort.
.
The building had a number of various uses, including being a Inn, hotel, and finally in the 1950's it became a restaurant. The last iteration as a restaurant was as the Hartsville Inn.
.
In the late 1990's the Hartsville Inn fell on hard times, and closed permanently. There was no plan to save the old Hartsville Inn building so the Township had a number of haunted House events, and finally the Fire Company received permission to train in the building doing some controlled burns. Shortly afterwards the 14 acre site was sold at sheriff sale.
.
In short order, it was then resold, and the Township entered into negotiation with the new owners on what was the best use for the property. It was decided to create a colonial village type office park which was sympathetic to the surrounding historic Hartsville Village of Warminster Township.
.
The original concept was to have a restored Hartsville Inn which would become modern offices, with a refurbished colonial exterior. The rest of the property would be a series of new office buildings which would complement the main building.
.
Unfortunately, the Haunted House events, dry rot, termites, unstable foundation, and the controlled burns made the main building economically unfeasible to restore. So the main building was razed. In the same location, a replica of the main building was designed by AG3L (geo-cache owner) and constructed.
.
The Geocache
.
The cache is a Rubbermmaid 4 oz. container cache in a spot facing the cemetery. It is a a great spot.
.
**MUGGLE ALERT** Its safe to say tht the 1st container is gone. The groundskeepers raked the area clean. I moved the cache onto the cemetery property. Bring a pen/pencil. If you take one of the trinkets, please replace with something else. Please replace container in same spot.
.
There is off street parking. Stealth is an absolute as this area is busy during work hours. Aside from the muggle factor it should be a very easy C&D. Step lightly in the landscaped area. You might even consider not leaving footprints directly to the cache by traversing laterally to the side.
.
Good Luck.
