Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America
requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21
required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project
that—on average—requires 167 service hours. In 2008
alone, that translated to $16 million in service (based on the
national volunteer hour value of $19.51/hr).
The photo shows the entrance to Lykins Park where an Eagle Scout
Project was completed in September 2004 by an Eagle Scout from
Troop 56 in the Shawnee District of the Blue Grass Council of
Kentucky. Troop 56 is chartered by Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The
Eagle Scout Project was the planning, construction, and the
landscaping at the entrance of the park. Troop 56 was founded in
1975, and has 31 Eagle scouts to its credit.
The cache is camouflauged and is large enough to contain trade
items and travel bugs, besides the log. The cache is well marked
and is starting out with a few trade items, and a prize for the FTF
(in the bag with the log). If you take something out, please
replace it with something of equal or greater value.
Lykins Park, dedicated in 1975 and covering 40 acres of land, is
located in a rural area on Mount Sterling Road. Of the many
amenities offered, this regional park includes picnic areas with
shelter, 3 lighted tennis courts, 1 basketball court and a
skateboard park. A basball field complex containing 2 lighted Major
League fields, a Junior League field, 2 Rookie League fields, and a
girls softball field serves as home to Winchester Little League
Baseball. In addition to the baseball complex, the park is equipped
with a concession stand and a playground area. The park's rolling
landscape provides a good visual appeal while functioning as a
place for concerts, with a concert stage, firework shows, and other
large community events.Cache is approved by Geri Remley, Director
of the Parks and Recreation.
