This cache is located approximately 3ft (1m) above ground level. Sorry, it is not accessible to wheelchair cachers.
This cache was created in partnership with BBC Sussex and South Downs National Park Authority as part of the BBC Summer of Wildlife 2013, to celebrate 30 years of BBC Sussex broadcasting across the county of Sussex and encourage more people to discover the wonderful landscapes and wildlife on their doorstep.
The cache includes three sets of goodies from both organisations for the first three finders.
The site for this cache was chosen, as it is in the South Downs National Park – an area of outstanding beauty and history that people are encouraged to explore.
Although the South Downs most popular locations are heavily visited, many people greatly value the sense of tranquillity and unspoilt places which give them a feeling of peace and space. In some areas the landscape seems to possess a timeless quality, largely lacking intrusive development and retaining areas of dark night skies.
Around this cache there are many interesting sites to explore and learn about Lewes’s history, culture and natural habitats, such as:
The public house below the cache:
Named to commemorate the Lewes avalanche which occurred on 27 December 1836. A huge build-up of snow on the chalk cliff overlooking the town collapsed onto the settlement 100 metres below, destroying a row of cottages and killing eight people. It remains the deadliest avalanche on record in the UK.
(Perhaps visit AVALANCHE! cache: GC2FRWX)
The Linklater Pavilion and Nature Reserve:
A fantastic place to see wildlife and learn about the railways heritage. You should be able to see the heart of reeds from the cache location.
(Perhaps visit Red Lions! cache: GC4D2NA)
The Martyrs’ Memorial:
At the top of the hill is a monument to the 17 Protestant martyrs burned at the stake in Lewes during the reign of Queen Mary in the 16th Century.
(Perhaps visit Martyrs Tomartyr multi-cache: GCKR5B)
From this cache you can also discover more caches on the Lewes to Glynde walk via Mount Caburn, one of the highest points in East Sussex, where the remains of an Iron Age hill fort can be seen.
(Perhaps visit WW2 Dad's Dad's Army Rifle Range (Bible Bottom): GC220RC - one of my many WW2-based caches in Sussex)
Photographs:
Feel free to upload your photos of the local flora, fauna, and views near this cache or anywhere along your walks across the South Downs.
Goodies:
The cache was launched on the 9th Sept 2013 and was originally stocked with goodies donated by the BBC and the South Downs National Park Authority.
