Where'd e go? Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Odyssians: Well Mr O used to drive to Thornbury every day, 3 times a day. His work zone has changed and we rarely manage to get to the area. Thanks for all the lovely comments in the logs. Time for this one to go.

Geocache Description:

Inspired by frequent visits to Thornbury by Mr O in part of The Odyssian fleet. It's a pretty and unusual town with a long history.
Some great views of the Severn valley from the high points above the town. The cache is a camouflaged magnetic micro with log.

Doctor Foster
Went to Gloucester
In a shower of rain.
He stepped in a puddle
Right up to his middle
And never went there again!

'Dr Foster' was reputed to be none other than King Edward I (aka Longshanks, 1239-1307) who was thought to have visited Gloucester, fallen from his horse into a puddle and vowed never to go there again.
Thornbury lies just off the main A road to Gloucester and the cache site indicates in which direction to travel. The town was in existence during Edward I time, having been granted a town charter in 1252.

A town pump, at one time, a central feature of any village or town, is on a small roundabout at the bottom of the High Street. The 'original' pump was removed in 1924 after its declaration as a road hazard by the council. In 1984 a copy of the pump and the canopy was forged.
In 2002 (750th anniversary of the town charter) both pump and canopy were temporarily painted gold to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the present Queen Elizabeth II. The pump is usually decorated with flowers and there are often proudly displayed "birthday greetings" notices placed on the pump.
Not far from this pump, in Castle Street, is a fountain set into the wall, commemorating Hector Maclaine, son of Mayor Maclaine and brave soldier. It cites his tragic death, in Kandahar.
A further memorial can be found in St Mary's Parish Church and here

Congratulations to Dippy & the Demon for FTF!!!
