Welcome to Council Bluff Lake Recreation Area. This is one of my favorite fishing, camping and swimming areas of Missouri. At the recreation area you may enjoy fishing at the 440 ultra clear acre lake made just below the spring that starts the Black River. A nice launching ramp is available for all boats but a 10hp restriction is imposed. Larger engines on boats may be used if the "no wake" speed is observed. A very nice trail comes off the parking lot by the launch which winds over to the beach area. I encourage you to explore this trail if you do nothing else in the area. This section is open all year long and has picnic tables along the beginning of the trail. Swimming is available on a beautiful 54,000sq. foot white sand beach. There is a concession stand, changing rooms, flush toilet, water fountains and showers. Also a small play area near the beach close to the canoes and paddle boats available for rent when the beach is open. Several pavilions are close to the beach and are available to reserve. Camping is mostly "improved" primitive with water available at several places along with outhouses. Most sites have mini-shelters with shelves for storage of your food items and fire pits are at every site. A camp ground host is on-site. Group camping sites are also available.
A 12 mile long hiking/biking loop trail is a great way to see the beautiful area. The trail also has a half-mile cutoff to the Trace Creek Section of the Ozark Trail. Several bike races are conducted along this loop trail each year and assures the trial is well maintained.
Back to the cache! You are looking for a "Pre-Form" (looks like a big test tube) that has a camo job in the island area at the entrance to the park area. It is between the In and Out drives, but closer to the In road. An attendant/fee hut is close by which is open during the summer months. They charge $3/vehicle to proceed any further than the cache site. When the attendant is not there, you are encouraged to explore the park at no cost. However, gates may be closed to the campgrounds and beach leaving the launching ramp site open which is still worth seeing. (And remember that trial I mentioned above!)
Here is a link that you might like to see concerning the area: http://www.visitusa.com/missouri/lakes/councilblufflake.htm Have fun and be sure to bring that camera!
