Geocache Description:

13/2/14 New cache has been placed.
A nano cache NOT on either the pub or church grounds, although the community-run pub is worth a visit!

The Yarcombe Inn stands next to the Yarcombe parish church. It was originally a church house providing accommodation for pilgrims and travellers. It would have had a stable for horses and would have brewed its own beer and baked bread. On feast days it would have been the centre of activities. The church house was first mentioned as an inn in 1672 when run by John Northam with surety provided by Sir Francis Drake. Through time, it became variously known as The Angel Inn, The Yarcombe Inn and the Yarcombe Angel it is currently a community-run pub.

The current church, consecrated in 1311 by the Bishop of Exeter was not the first church on this site. There is evidence that neither the inn nor the church were the first buildings on this site with records showing payments to a vicar in 1228. The church suffered as many with the Dissolution in the 16th century and that of the fervour of the Puritans in the 17th, the destruction of religious images in stained glass, wood or stone lead to severe deterioration. The church largely owes its current, restored form to lay rector, Sir Francis Eliott Drake who completed works in 1891.
