Geocache Description:

A traditional cache to bring you to this interesting but quiet monastic site. It is reached down a lane which can be driven, but is not marked on the maps. The turn on to the lane is marked by the waypoint.

The ruined church at Aghowle is located in a quiet part of County Wicklow on a site that was very important in early Christian times. St. Finian established a monastery here in the first quarter of the sixth century, and he is said to have lived here for 16 years, before he moved on and founded the famous monastery of Clonard in Co. Meath. Legend tells how St. Finian had erected a wonderful bell at Aghowle, the peals of which could be heard for many miles around, and which was much loved by the monastic community. When he established Clonard, Finian had the bell moved to the new monastery, but it disappeared one night and the following morning was tolling at Aghowle. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to relocate the stubborn bell, Finian gave up and left it in its original home. The current church, dating from the 11th century is 18.5m long by 7.4m wide, with gables more than 11m high, so was clearly an impressive structure. The doorway in Gaelic- Romanesque style is one of only two in the country, and has an unusual finely decorated architrave.
