Geocache Description:

This cache is a continuation of a series on county courthouses begun by ccindyy/bubb in the southeastern corner of the state. It is placed here with their express permission.

The county is named in honor of Patrick Cleburne, an Irish-American from Arkansas, Major General in the Army of the Confederacy. He was the highest-ranked foreign-born officer in the Southern army. He died in the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee.

Cleburne County was established on December 6, 1866, by an act of the state legislature. The county was made from territory in Benton (now Calhoun), Randolph, and Talladega counties. In 1867, Edwardsville was made the county seat. An election was held in 1905 to move the county seat to Heflin. The result of that election, which agreed to move the seat, was appealed to the Supreme Court, who decided on July 1, 1906, to uphold the election results. Heflin is still the county seat.

The Courthouse was built in 1907 in the Classical Revival style
