Geocache Description:

This cache is a continuation of a series on county courthouses begun by ccindyy/bubb in the southeastern corner of the state. It is placed here with their express permission.

St. Clair County, a county older than the state, was officially established in November, 1818 by the second territorial Legislature and was named after General Arthur St. Clair .
It is named is in honor of General Arthur St. Clair, who came to America from Scotland as an officer in the British Army in the French and Indian War. He settled in America and served as a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He also was the only Governor of the Northwest Territory.

St. Clair County was established on November 20, 1818 by the Alabama Territory legislature by splitting the area from Shelby County. In later years Cherokee, DeKalb, and Etowah Counties were formed from territory originally part of St. Clair. It has one county seat in Ashville and another in Pell City. While other counties in Alabama have multiple courthouses, St. Clair County is the only county in Alabama with more than one county seat.

Because the central part of the county is mountainous, making it difficult for people in the populous southern portion to get to Ashville, the Alabama Constitution of 1901 provided for Pell City in the southern part of the county to serve as the county seat for the Southern Judicial District of the county. A constitutional amendment in 1907 established Pell City, named for George H. Pell, an early settler, as the second county seat.

About the cache: there is liable to be a goodly amount of traffic during business hours. Watch out for muggles!

Congratulations to Steret Cacher for making is first FTF!
