Geocache Description:

If you wish to trade, take ONE item. Leave something of EQUAL or GREATER value.
Cache owners fill caches with quality SWAG. We often find junk when returning for maintenance.

The geocache shown on this page is a part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT), a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten participating counties. This cache contains a unique self-inking rubber stamp, which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Click on the Allegheny GeoTrail Logo below to visit the AGT website at ALLEGHENY GEO TRAIL for complete details and a listing of participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at www.geocaching.com.

BRADFORD CITY WATER AUTHORITY - HEFFNER RESERVOIR

"IMAGINE a landscape of forested mountains, clear flowing streams, a fantastic array of trees, shrubs and wildflowers, wildlife of all varieties; a place where the beauty of natural balance prevails; a place where the community, the landowners and the land users work together to facilitate this balance; a place where local ingenuity, a strong connection to the land and voluntary stewardship have combined for the benefit of these people and their paradise. Sound far-fetched? Not if you hunt or live near the 74,000-acre Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative (KQDC) in northwest McKean County, where such a landscape has been in the works since 1998. Folks in Bradford have a history of being forward thinkers. During the oil rush of the early 19th Century, deciding to guarantee their water supply, the townfolk built the precursors to what's now the Heffner Reservoir. They valued the resource, they knew it was important and they knew it was possible to spoil it. So they set aside a share of land in the watershed and protected it, thus ensuring an ample supply of clean water for their community long into the future. Now they are protecting their forests, their livelihood and their recreational traditions." GC1678F

"In 1950, the city applied for and was granted water allocations to withdraw water from the North Branch of Sugar Run and the West Branch of Tunugnwant Creek. Following receipt of these allocations, persons involved with the operation of the water system became concerned that the proposed points of withdrawal might become contaminated from the upstream operation of portions of the Bradford Oil Fields. In 1955 the two points of water withdrawal were abandoned and a decision was made to construct a new reservoir on the West Branch of the Tunungwant Creek above Kissem Run. This is the site of Reservoir Number 5, now known as Heffner Reservoir. When it came time to acquire land and construct the Heffner Reservoir, the City of Bradford recognized that it did not have sufficient financial resources to construct a facility of the magnitude being proposed. Therefore, in 1955 the Bradford City Water Authority was created and charged, as its initial project, with the acquistion of the land, planning and construction of the proposed new reservoir." WATER - GIFT OF LIFE
The depth of a soul is not measured by what appears on the surface.

If a fifty-five gallon drum of water represented the total supply of water on the planet then:
OCEANS would be represented by 53 gallons, 1 quart, 1 pint and 12 ounces;
ICECAPS and GLACIERS would represent 1 gallon, and 12 ounces;
ATMOSPHERE would contribute 1 pint and 4.5 ounces;
GROUNDWATER would add up to 1 quart, and 11.4 ounces;
FRESHWATER LAKES would represent one half ounce;
INLAND SEAS AND SALINE LAKES would add up to over one third of an ounce;
SOIL MOISTURE and VALDOSE WATER would total to about one fourth of an ounce;
RIVERS of the world would only add up to one-hundredth of an ounce (less than one one-millionth of the water on the planet).

OPTIONAL
Solve the water puzzles.

1. Given two bowls: You have a 5-liter bowl, a 3-liter bowl, and an unlimited access to water. Measure exactly 4 liters?

2. Given two bowls: Measure 6 liters of water using only 4 and 9-liter bowls?

3. Given three bowls: You have bowls with 8, 5 and 3 liters capacity. Divide 8 liters in half (4 + 4 liters) with the minimum number of water transfers. Note that the 8-liter bowl is initially filled with 8 liters of water and the other two bowls are empty. That is all water you have.

4. Given three bowls: You have bowls with 7, 4 and 3 liters capacity. Only the 7-liter is full. Pouring the water the fewest number of times, make the quantities of 2, 2, and 3 liters.
