Treasures of Frankfort #2

In 1925 a monument was built to honor the Ann Arbor Carferries at the east end of downtown Frankfort on Main Street and Seventh Street. Originally the lighthouses on each side were built of stones gathered from Lake Michigan . The Gateway Arch is a tribute to the ships which sailed out of Frankfort. In 1937, to make improvements in the roads and the sewers, the Gateway Arch was moved to its present site on 115 on the hilltop. At some point in time, I haven’t been able to discover when, the state planned to tear down the Arch. But the members of the Frankfort community protested its removal. It remains a reminder of the importance of the Ann Arbor Car Ferry Fleet that crossed Lake Michigan to other port cities until 1982.
