After completing a few of the "Wild Side" caches near Wild Rose
I decided to extend the concept here in the White River Marsh which
has very few caches for it's size. The basic concept of the White
River Marsh - Outback series is going to be to highlight areas off
the beaten path. Most of these caches will have some feature that
challenges you a bit from the terrain perspective. This may include
water (i.e. this is a marsh), some longer hikes, and other
interesting terrain related challenges.
All the caches will be multi-stage caches with WP1 near a
parking area. All caches in this series will be disabled during the
gun deer season by removing WP1 which will be replaced at the end
of the season. The finals will be left in place but I wanted to
minimize any hunter / geocacher conflict during the gun deer
season.
This cache is located near the NE corner of the White River
Marsh along Cty D. This cache is a 3 stage multi and the terrain
will vary from an easy 1.5 to 3 depending on which route you take.
The final container is an oversized pill bottle with room for small
items or coins. On the day of the cache placement, I was able to
walk the entire route twice (taking the shortest route) and the
deepest water was only ankle deep. It would be possible to do the
entire cache without ever getting near water, but this will involve
a longer hike, so it's your choice. There is a very defined trail
to get you 3/4 of the way to WP2 (the trail will be obvious at
WP1). The trek from WP2 to WP3 is where the decision comes in and
you can either take the most direct route which is the most scenic
or the longer route going back the way you came (and then heading
south and then west). Total distance taking the shortest path is
about approximately 0.9 miles (or 1.25 miles if you backtrack).
Note: There is a Spoiler / Helper picture posted to help
you identify the final location (i.e. geobeacon). You decide if you
want to look or not.

The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to James
Holzwart of the Wisconsin DNR (Berlin Office). Geocaches placed on
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource managed lands require
permission by means of a notification form. Please print out a
paper copy of the notification form, fill in all required
information, then submit it to the land manager. The DNR
Notification form and land manager information can be obtained at:
