Geocache Description:

Wildspace

The Wildspace Network is a 4.5 mile walking and cycling route connecting Cramlington and the villages of Seghill and Seaton Delaval. This artwork is one of a series of intriguing new landmarks at key points along the trail. The art trail has been funded through the Lottery and was curated by Inspire, the South East Northumberland Public Art Initiative.

Capella by Paula Chambers

Cast, polished and lacquered aluminium shroud Capella is the technical word for a wayside shrine also meaning cloak. Wayside shrines are found by the roadside all over the world, traditionally at important points of any journey (cross roads, hazardous stretches) as resting points, a chance to pray for a safe journey or to give thanks for a difficult journey completed. When travelling on the Art Trail at Cramlington you can appreciate the very real difficulties and perils of travelling along these paths before motorization and especially before the industrial revolution when vast tracts of land were virtually uninhabited. In view of this a wayside shrine seems appropriate for this setting. Capella is large enough for a person to stand inside. The mirror polished finish not only reflects the individual inside Cappella but also reflects the surrounding landscape, presenting the viewer with a dazzling spectacle suggesting that, "all is without is also within".
