The Niagara Escarpment
September 18, 2010

The Niagara Escarpment towers over Halton. Allowing its beauty to be viewed by everyone living around it. Stretching 725km, from Queenston to Tobermory, the escarpment has evolved for over 450 million years.
This rock was exposed to erosion and was sculpted by the Ice Age. During the Ice Age the Escarpment was buried in two to three kilometers high of ice. As the ice dissolved the resulting water from the melted ice, expanded rivers, and valleys. The ice age molded the escarpment into cliffs, small water falls and rolling hills. Many people around this rock over look its natural beauty. In 1988, Dr. Larson, from the University of Guelph found cedars up to 700 years old! The cedars had only grown a little taller than a meter and no more than 10 inches in diameter. They are among some of the slowest growing plants in the world. The cliff has prevented the cedars from human disturbances, such as farming, or building structures. The escarpment is made out of four types of rock, limestone, shale, sandstone, and dolomite.
The Niagara Escarpment is also known for its beauty as well, from the farmlands, wetlands, woodlands, and all the animals, ranging from mammal to amphibian.
Now the escarpment has many urban and rural communities surrounding it. Small businesses and attractions such as, Chudleighs farm, Springridge farm, and Danbrie Farms. Many people are trying to preserve it beauty, by making websites such as Halton hikes.
