Geocache Description:

This cache was launched on the "Perfect 10" date of October 10, 2010 (10/10/10), to honor one of the most famous gymnasts in the world, the first one to earn a perfect score of 10 at the Montreal Olympics, Nadia Comaneci. It's an easy walk over the baseball field from the parking area.

I wanted to do something special on this day, and after discarding a couple other ideas, I chose to place my first cache, honoring Nadia Comaneci, the "Perfect 10" gymnast from my home country, Romania.

Nadia Comaneci was born on 12 November 1961, in Onesti, Bacau, Romania. At age 6 Nadia was chosen to attend Béla Károlyi's experimental gymnastics school after Karolyi spotted her and a friend doing cartwheels in a schoolyard. Nadia was training with the Károlyis by the time she was 7 years old, in 1968. She was one of the first students at the gymnastics school established in Onesti by Béla and his wife, Marta, who would later defect to the United States and become coaches of many prominent American gymnasts.

At the age of 13 Nadia won three gold medals and one silver at the European championships in 1975, in Skien, Norway. One year later at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, she became the absolute all around gymnastics champion and an instant celebrity. The little Romanian, received for five times a perfect 10 score and won three gold medals in the individual all around, bar and parallel and one silver, with the team. I remember staying up at midnight watching the Olympics with my family, and waiting for her scores to come up... then, since the electronic boards were not designed to post a perfect score of 10, they displayed a 1.00!!! Nadia was a great technician but also a girl full of spirit and confidence, a role model for many little girls around the world. If you haven't seen her perform, watch her floor routine here at the 1976 Olympics: (visit link)

Maybe after reading this, you will be inspired to try the monkey bars in the playground nearby (see the optional challenge below).

The cache container is a bright pink water bottle with gymnastics imprint on it, hidden in the trees behind the baseball field. The area could be busy in the afternoon or weekends with soccer and baseball team practices, or dog owners out for a walk. Parking is available in the parking lot near the tennis courts, but from the car you'll have to walk over a grass field so the cache is not wheelchair accessible. Dogs are welcome and in fact, part of this park was considered an "off leash" area in the past, but I do't think it's official. Children could have a good time at the playground nearby and you could even play ball on the field or tennis on the courts. Have fun!

Three gymnastics medals are waiting for the first, second and third to find! There is room for small travel bugs and coins. Please do not stuff large toys in the cache. PLEASE make sure you place the cache back as you found it or BETTER so it's not visible from a distance.

OPTIONAL CHALLENGE: Take a photo of yourself doing a handstand, cartwheel or hanging on the monkey bars at the playground and post with your log. Should be fun! :)
