One of the best places in the World to see the Southern Right
Whale. By law boats are only allowed to get within 300m of whales.
By staying on the shore near the cache you can often get within 20
to 30m of the whales! The Whale season runs from June to December,
peaking in October. Out of whale season one can enjoy a magnificent
view of Walker Bay.

The
Right Spot
Just 10 interesting facts about
Southern Right Whales:
-
Adults are about 15 meters long!
-
They weigh about
40
tonnes!!
-
They
live about 50
years
-
They have 2 blowholes. This is why the

-
The Southern Right Whale got its
name during the time when they were hunted. They were referred to
as the "right" whales to kill
because they would float when dead (which made it easy for the
whalers to find them in the ocean and transport them back to the
whaling station).
-
Individual whales can be identified by
the callosities
on their heads
-
The callosities
consist of barnacles and whale
lice!
-
They feed in
Summer in the Antarctic waters
-
Their population is growing around 7% a
year
The
cache was hidden on the 10th of October 2010 around

There
were whales visible, near the cache at the time.
